What is mandatory
Economic operator
Mandatory The registered name of the economic operator responsible for placing the product on the EU market.
Legal basis
A battery carries information identifying its manufacturer, and the battery passport publishes that label information, so a battery passport must name the economic operator.
“information identifying the manufacturer in accordance with Article 38(7)”
CELEX:32023R1542, Annex VI, Part A, point 1
Cited from Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC, retrieved 2026-09-10. To be read again by 2027-09-10.
Recycled content
Mandatory in some cases The materials in the product that were recovered from waste, and the share of each that was.
Mandatory when Battery category is one of Industrial battery, Electric vehicle battery, SLI battery.
Legal basis
An industrial, electric vehicle or SLI battery containing cobalt, lead, lithium or nickel must be accompanied by documentation of how much of each was recovered from waste, so a passport for one of those categories must carry its recycled content.
“shall be accompanied by documentation containing information about the percentage share of cobalt, lithium or nickel that is present in active materials and that has been recovered from battery manufacturing waste or post-consumer waste”
CELEX:32023R1542, Article 8(1)
Cited from Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC, retrieved 2026-09-10. To be read again by 2027-09-10.
Battery category
Mandatory The category the battery is classified into by what it is designed to power, which decides most of what else is required of it.
Legal basis
A battery must be labelled with the category it falls into, so a battery passport must say which category the battery is.
“the battery category and information identifying the battery in accordance with Article 38(6)”
CELEX:32023R1542, Annex VI, Part A, point 2
Cited from Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC, retrieved 2026-09-10. To be read again by 2027-09-10.
Rated capacity
Mandatory The charge the battery is rated to deliver from full under the reference test conditions.
Legal basis
The publicly accessible part of a battery passport lists the battery’s rated capacity in ampere hours, so a battery passport must carry one.
“rated capacity (in Ah)”
CELEX:32023R1542, Annex XIII, point 1(g)
Cited from Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC, retrieved 2026-09-10. To be read again by 2027-09-10.
Carbon footprint per kWh
Mandatory The product’s carbon footprint per kilowatt hour of energy it provides over its expected service life.
Legal basis
A battery’s carbon footprint declaration states the footprint per kilowatt hour the battery provides over its service life, and the passport publishes that declaration, so a battery passport must carry the figure.
“the carbon footprint of the battery, calculated as kg of carbon dioxide equivalent per one kWh of the total energy provided by the battery over its expected service life”
CELEX:32023R1542, Article 7(1)(d)
Cited from Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC, retrieved 2026-09-10. To be read again by 2027-09-10.
State of health
Mandatory The capacity this individual battery still holds, as a share of the capacity it was rated at when new.
Legal basis
A battery passport must include the state of health of the individual battery it describes.
“information on the state of health of the battery pursuant to Article 14”
CELEX:32023R1542, Annex XIII, point 4(b)
Cited from Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC, retrieved 2026-09-10. To be read again by 2027-09-10.
Charge cycles
Mandatory The number of charging and discharging cycles this individual battery has been through.
Legal basis
A battery passport must include the data resulting from the individual battery’s use, of which the number of charging and discharging cycles is named first.
“information and data resulting from its use, including the number of charging and discharging cycles and negative events”
CELEX:32023R1542, Annex XIII, point 4(d)
Cited from Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC, retrieved 2026-09-10. To be read again by 2027-09-10.
